BIOME PROJECT
SCIENCE 8
RECOMMENDED SITES

1. This site, from the University of Berkeley, California, is an excellent starting place.  It classifies the planet into five main biomes, so you may need to search within the major biome to find a more specific biome.

2. This site gives brief information but is also a good starting place if you don’t have much information about your biome.  It also gives a good overview in the “biome summary “ page.

3.  This site is posted by the National Science Teachers Association.  It gives excellent general information and very good maps.  They use the “five biome” classification system, so search within the major biome for information on your specific biome.  Some of the links are excellent.

4.  This site from NASA gives very good but brief information on biomes and especially climatograph or "climograph"(rainfall vs temperature).  You must visit this site to get climograph information.   NASA classifies biomes into seven major groups (hint: if you’re working on Taiga, try “Coniferous forest”).

5. DO NOT TAKE INFORMATION FROM THIS SITE. The information posted here was gathered by students and has many errors. This site gives some excellent maps showing the locations of the biomes on our planet. You may use the maps if necessary.

6.  This site from Radford University, Virginia is designed for a second year geography class, but it has great pictures.

7. From the University of Puget Sound, this site is aimed at college-level courses. But there is some excellent info on plant and animal adaptations if you scan. Click on the textbox on the right-hand-side to select your biome.

  8.  A site from California State University with good detail of most major biomes.  Especially good for plants and animals.

  • When searching on Google use keyword search phrases such as: “temperate forest biome”.
The quotation marks will give sites with the keywords treated as a specific phrase and will often give better search results.
